This is a view of the DB Reactor Core with the refueling bridge mast rolled away. 
Note the areas in the core:  the blue glowing area is water between the fuel assemblies.
The dark squares are USED fuel assemblies. The light squares are NEW fuel assemblies.  
Note that at all times, there is a minimum of 23 Feet cover of borated water above the core.
