The Mayfly
This insect annually hatches from Lake Erie and other fresh waters all over the
world.
Other names for these insects are "Canadian Soldiers", and "Junebugs".
There are
Many Species!!!!
The city of Port Clinton, Ohio, (mostly, it seems!!), and the towns along the southwestern
shores of Lake Erie
will get visits by tons of these critters each summer, especially if the winds are going
the right direction.
They die the same day, after attaching themselves to buildings and vehicles, then they
stink a LOT!
Yet, they are a
valuable indicator of acquatic health! After the zebra mussels cleaned up Lake Erie,
for example, there was a great resurgence of annual hatches of the Mayfly in NW Ohio!
